Popular Dishes
The Famous Ghana Jollof Rice
To be considered famous all over the world means it taste really good. This dish is originally from Senegal but best prepared in Ghana, and is made with long grainier basmati rice, vegetables, tomatoes, onions, vegetable oil, pepper, spices, and meat.
Banku and Tilapia
Banku and tilapia is a typical traditional Ghanaian dish that is well known across all of West Africa. Banku itself is made from corn and cassava flour, always served with either stew, soup, or hot pepper sauce. On the other hand, tilapia is a popular river fish best prepared by frying, baking, or grilling. Banku and tilapia are a perfect combination at any given time.
Tuo Zaafi
Think of a very nutritious and easy-to-digest dish, think tuo zaafi. This is a common corn flour dish that is made up of three separate dishes – the ayoyo sauce, meat stew, and tuo zaafi itself. It is a very popular dish in the northern part of Ghana and also in countries like Mali, Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
Fufu and Light Soup
Fufu and light soup are favorites to a majority of locals in the whole of West Africa. Fufu is a dough-like food prepared from fermented or fresh cassava, often made in the traditional Ghanaian, Liberian, Cuban, and Ivorian methods. Light soup on the other hand is an indigenous soup of the Greater Accra region of Ghana, originally prepared as a tomatoes-base sea fish light soup also known as Aklo or Aklor. Over the years, the preparation of light soup evolved, featuring both fish and meat.
Waakye
Commonly known as rice and beans in Nigeria and other countries in West Africa, Waakye is Ghana’s version of this delicious combination. Eaten at any time of the day, it is prepared with red sorghum leaf sheath, popularly known as “waakye leaves” which is responsible for its reddish-brown color.
Kelewele
This list of popular West African dishes would be incomplete without mentioning this savory, and crunchy side dish. Kelewele becomes an instant favorite dish to anyone who tries it for the first time. It is made with ripe plantain, peeled and cut into bite-size chunks, and seasoned with spices the likes of garlic, onion, ginger, and cayenne pepper, which is then fried.
Our Story
It started as a passion to find authentic West African food.. I had long being searching for local takeaways serving good West African food but never quite found one. That’s when Khal’s Kitchen was born.
Originally from the Northern Region of Ghana who came to the UK at a very tender age, and ever since then food is the one thing that has never left me.
My mum said as a toddler, rather than milk or baby food I would always prefer Tuo Zaafi, Waakye, or Fufu, which shows my taste for authentic real food began at a very early age.
Khal’s Kitchen isn’t just for Africans alone but foodies who would love to try out western African dishes without having to travel to Africa. We bring all the rich African culture of Ghana to the Urban State of West London and we make sure to spread the theme across the tiny little details of our services. As the flavours and textures blend beautifully in the food so do we want our customers to feel when eating our food.

In West Africa, there is a habit of eating together and telling stories. Eating together is an important part of building long-lasting relationships which goes far beyond just sharing a table, it teaches toddlers better-eating habits, prevents serious psychosocial issues, curtails weight struggles in adulthood, improves self-esteem, and communication skills.
